BMWs vehicles are outstanding pieces of engineering and artistry. High-quality vehicles that have shown customers time and time again that these cars are worth every penny of what you pay for them.
However, with these German vehicles, it is still a working car does have a problem or two, one of which is the infamous alternator seal oil leak.
Every mechanic who has ever worked on a BMW can tell you that this is a well-documented issue that is a common cause of owners bringing in their BMWs to the shop. The cost of taking it to the shop can be very high to replace a simple and inexpensive part.
So, what causes this infamous problem in BMWs?
The alternator bracket seal is in place to contain oil within your engine, this tiny gasket is just a small piece of rubber but due to its location it is a heavily worn piece of rubber. When the bracket seal wears or breaks it will cause your alternator to leak, which can cause serious issues for your engine if left unattended. This is the one poor design of this otherwise outstanding vehicle. Now, don’t be discouraged this doesn’t happen in all BMWs – it is commonly found in models such as the X5, the 745i, e65 and the 550i. If your vehicle isn’t on this list don’t disregard this message, it can still occur in your BMW, so it is good to keep that warning in mind.
The greatest problem with this issue is that it is not an easy fix. Due to where the alternator is located in most BMWs it is difficult to get to and many pieces of the engine have to be removed before you can even reach the alternator, including and not limited to at least one motor mount. The best suggestion we can give is, unless you are handing with a wrench to bring it into us at FT Auto so we can handle all the heavy lifting for you.
We replace the gasket with a high-quality replacement and we even add extra sealant around the leaking areas to help avoid this happening to you and your BMW again in the future. The reason why we suggest you bring your BMW to us, at The German Auto Doctor, because we specialize in BMWs is because if you don’t take it to a shop that is well familiar with this beautiful design of engine it could end up costing you more in repairs and labor.
